Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, usually abbreviated BHRT, is a targeted replacement of various hormones with ones that are biologically identical (hence the name “bioidentical”) to the ones the body stops or decreases in production as we age. The goal is to improve well-being and the quality of life as we age. While entire textbooks are written on the subject of anti-aging medicine, this page will provide a brief overview.

Why would I consider BHRT?

Hormone Levels Aging

Humans have learned to survive longer than nature had planned. From a genetic standpoint, our bodies are programed to start slowing down hormone production around age 20 with significantly reduced levels by 40-50 years of age. The classic example of this is menopause in women, when the production of estrogen and progesterone begin to radically slow production. These hormones, in addition to providing the ability to reproduce, affect other systems of the body as well.

The complementary system in men is called andropause, when testosterone production begins to fall. In fact the amount of testosterone produced in males at age 20 is several times greater than at age 60. Currently there is a great deal of attention in the media to low testosterone or “Low-T” as it is often referred.

Patients who seek Anti-Aging treatments find they have overall better health, better control of weight, improved libido, increased energy levels and a generally improved feeling of well-being.

As a whole, many of the different endocrine systems in our body start to diminish production over time, including:

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • DHEA
  • HgH (Human Growth Hormone)
  • Melatonin

Additionally, the cells in our bodies may decline in their ability to absorb and utilize hormones, requiring increased amounts of the hormone to achieve the same level of effectiveness. Thyroid hormone is a typically mentioned as a good example of these types of hormonal changes.

What does Anti-aging – BHRT therapy involve?

  • You’ll have an initial consultation to review your medical history and make sure you’re a good candidate for BHRT
  • An initial lab panel is done, and then a follow-up visit is scheduled to review the results and make recommendations for treatment.
  • After therapy is started, 1-3 smaller lab panels are done over the next several weeks to make sure levels are appropriate. Medication dosages may be adjusted to achieve optimum levels.
  • Once everything has stabilized, labwork is usually checked every several months to a year to ensure effective treatment.

What is “Pellet Therapy”?

  • Pellet therapy is the use of bioidentical hormone pellets, placed just under the skin to achieve optimum levels of hormones without the need for daily creams or pills or injections.
  • While the use of pellet therapy has been around for decades, there has been a great interest recently in the use of pellets due to their convenience and effectiveness.
  • The process only takes a few minutes in the office with minimal discomfort and lasts for 4-6 months before needing to be repeated.
  • Hormones typically replaced using pellets are testosterone, estrogen and progesterone.

Anti-Aging Medicine is still a comparatively new field, with new advances being made yearly, and has not been completely accepted by everyone in the medical community, although a growing body of scientific studies supports the theory behind the treatment.
