Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts can be cumbersome for many women, whether you’re struggling to find shirts that fit and look good, you have a difficult time exercising or you’ve had to deal with teasing and unwanted attention. Many women with larger breasts have problems with upper back and neck pain, shoulder grooves and pain as well as breast pain and chronic rashes under the breasts. A breast reduction can help bring your body into balance with the rest of your figure, reducing and reshaping your breasts.*

A native Texan, Dr. David Dellinger maintains board certifications in plastic/reconstructive and general surgery, and has gained extensive experience performing breast plastic surgery procedures over more than 20 years in practice. At Elysian Plastic Surgery, Dr. Dellinger works with women in the Austin area and beyond who are interested in improving their figures with breast enhancement surgery.

Best Candidates for Breast Reduction

Breast reduction may be right for you if you’re healthy and have naturally large breasts. The best candidates may feel that their breasts are too large and out of proportion with their other features or that their breast size interferes with physical activities.

You may also experience physical discomfort caused by the size of your breasts, such as indentations from bra straps on your shoulders, frequent rashes or skin irritation in the creases under your breasts and chronic pain in your upper back, neck and shoulders from the weight of your breasts. Breast reduction can also correct asymmetry for women who have large breasts of different sizes.*

Breast reduction may not be right for women who are significantly overweight and women who plan to have children in the near future. Breast reduction surgery shouldn’t affect your milk glands if you do have a baby afterward and want to breastfeed but your results may be altered.

What to Expect

What To Expect At A Breast Reduction Consultation [Infographic]During your consultation, Dr. Dellinger will talk with you about your concerns and how to plan your procedure for the best results. A breast reduction includes a breast lift to correct sagging, reshape the breast mound and improve the position of the nipple.*

Dellinger may recommend liposuction or BodyTite instead of breast reduction surgery if you have fatty breasts that aren’t sagging and you don’t need more than a moderate reduction. Liposuction may also correct less severe asymmetry.*

On the day of your breast reduction, you will be under general anesthesia or IV sedation for the 2-hour procedure. Dr. Dellinger will then work through incisions at the edge of your areolas to remove excess breast tissue and lift and shape the remaining tissue. He may also reduce the size of the areolas and reposition the nipples.*

After your surgery, you will be wearing bra similar to a sports bra and have tape, bandages and small drains in each breast. The bra supports your breasts and may help reduce swelling.*

Your Breast Reduction Recovery & Results

You should plan on resting at home for the first few days. Be sure to have someone stay with you full-time to help if needed and get up and gently move around periodically. You may feel most comfortable relaxing in a reclined position with your knees bent. You can shower about 4 to 5 days after your breast reduction when the drains have been removed. You should wear your post-surgical bra at all times — except when bathing — for the first 2 weeks, then just when you’re awake for another 4 weeks. You can resume light exercise, such as walking, after 2 weeks, then gradually increase your physical activities over the next several weeks.

The change in your breasts should be visible right after surgery and long-lasting, though age, pregnancy, hormones and changes to your weight could affect your results with time. Your results should improve as the swelling subsides and your body heals.*

Breast Reduction FAQs

How much does breast reduction cost?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) the average cost for breast reduction in the United States is $5,680. This does not factor in costs beyond the surgery itself, so everything from anesthesia to facility fees will increase the cost. To know exactly what your breast reduction will cost you, you must schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon.

If you have concerns about being able to afford the breast reduction you need, speak with us about our financing options. Also, keep in mind that breast reduction might be covered by your insurance. Our billing team will help to maximize your benefits.

How do I find the best plastic surgeon for breast reduction near me?

Breast reduction is a very common surgery, and that means you will have numerous board-certified plastic surgeons near you who perform the surgery. Finding the right provider is a matter of deciding who is the right fit for you. We suggest you sit down for a consultation with three different surgeons and discuss your motivations for getting a breast reduction and what your expectations are. Ask to view their before and after photos and see how well they align with your starting point and end goal. Select the surgeon who feels confident about helping you achieve the end result you want and who makes you feel comfortable and empowered.

How much pain should I expect to experience after my breast reduction?

As with any surgery, you can expect to experience some pain directly after your breast reduction and soreness throughout the healing process. While there is some pain associated with the procedure, most patients find it to be less than anticipated. Know that this does go away in time, and most clients are unbothered within 4 to 6 weeks of their procedure. Also, know that you will not be left on your own to manage your discomfort; you will be given medications and are always welcome to call us with any concerns.

What should I expect from breast reduction recovery?

Breast reduction recovery is similar to that seen with other plastic surgery breast procedures. Most clients will need at least two days of complete rest after the procedure. Then, they can start moving around a bit while still taking it easy. After the first week, many women are able to return to work if they are comfortable doing so although women who work physically active jobs may require as long as two weeks. Light exercise can be resumed after 2 weeks. Within six weeks, most clients can resume all their usual activities.

Are there risks associated with breast reduction?

Breast reduction is a relatively safe procedure. At the same time, all surgeries come with risks. Clients and those who are helping them during the recovery period should be mindful of signs of infection, adverse reactions and excessive bleeding.

How do I know if I am a candidate for breast reduction?

If you are considering a breast reduction, most likely there is a physical need for the procedure, making you a strong candidate. However, only a board-certified plastic surgeon can determine if you are in a good position for the procedure.

How should I prepare for my breast reduction?

When you schedule your procedure, we will explain everything you need to do to get ready for the day of your surgery. Some things we ask are that you stop smoking for at least a month before the procedure, that you avoid medications that thin the blood and you have realistic expectations for your surgery, recovery and results.
