Chin Implants Austin

Many people are uncomfortable with the appearance of their jaw line, and especially dislike their profile. Sometime the lack of projection accentuates other areas such as a prominent nose or the shape of the eyes. Our society has a always had a history of attraction to a strong jawline. Just look at Hollywood celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Jennifer Lawrence, etc.

The entire face including the chin, nose, eyes, cheekbones and forehead need to be assessed in order to best determine the best way to alter the facial profile. If chin augmentation is recommended, it may be done as a “liquid” augmentation using fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse or Sculptra. These provide a temporary change in profile that can last as long as 2 years. Most patients choose a permanent implant to contour and shape the facial profile.

Additionally, many patients have other procedures such as liposuction of the neck area done at the same time to enhance the effects of the chin au

Reasons for Considering a Chin Implant:

  • Extend or enlarge the chin if the chin is recessed or small.
  • Create a more defined facial profile if the jaw or chin lacks distinction.
  • Bring the various aspects of the face into proportion.

General Procedure

With chin surgery, an implant is inserted through a small incision inside the mouth.  A small pocket is created of the precise size and shape to accomodate the implant. Sometimes a very small incision is made under the chin in order to adjust the implant or perform some liposuction. Chin augmentation is commonly performed along with rhinoplasty (nose surgery), liposuction or other facial procedures. Chin augmentation surgery procedures normally last from 30 minutes to one hour.

Recovery Process

Immediately after surgery, bandages, tape, or  other methods may be used to secure the implant. Patients are instructed to sleep on their backs with their head elevated for the first few days. Pain is generally minimal and well controlled with medication. Some patients may experience some slight temporary numbness to part of the lower lip for a couple of weeks after surgery. While swelling or bruising are common after surgery they are generally minimal and resolve quickly.

Infection is a small possibility and you will be provided with antibiotics for a few days to prevent this. If the incision was place on the inside of the mouth, small soft stitches will have been used, and oral hygiene will be very important in helping to prevent infection. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions given after surgery.  The substance used for chin and cheek implants is made of a durable, solid material that is considered permanent.
