What is a Photofacial?

A “Photofacial”, sometimes also referred to as a Fotofacial, is a treatment using IPL, which stands for Intensed Pulsed Light”, and is designed to provide amazing facial rejuvenation with little to no downtime.

The primary functions of a Fotofacial are:

  • Removal of excess pigmentation – especially sun spots or brown pigmentation
  • Removal of excess redness – spider veins, telangiectasias, rosacea, etc
  • Improving the overall tone and texture of the skin by regenerating the underlying collagen matrix.

Elysian Plastic Surgery proudly features the Sciton BBL, the latest and most advanced IPL treatment available. Multiple frequencies are available for treating many different skin types and conditions.

What’s involved in the treatment and do I need more than one?

Patients are given a topical numbing cream to apply before the procedure. Once the face is numbed, the cream is removed and a cool layer of gel applied. The treatment itself takes only 5-6 minutes and only involves minimal discomfort. Afterwards, the gel is removed and sunscreen is applied and makeup can be worn immediately. There may be some slight swelling and redness for an hour or so. Patients being treated with age spots or brown spots may notice temporary darkening of these areas which then fade or fall off in 5-7 days.

Typically, patients will benefit most from 3-5 baseline treatments spaced every 2-4 weeks apart.  We then recommend maintenance treatments every few weeks to few months to maintain results.

Can I get other treatments done, like Botox or Juvederm?

Yes, after your Photofacial, you can receive Botox or fillers, even on the same day.

Photofacial treatments have been around for a number of years, but with advanced technology like the Sciton BBL, we can provide a vastly improved level of service and outcomes. In fact, recent research has shown that with regular treatments, the DNA of the skin treated by BBL fotofacial actually begins functioning at a level of someone in their 20’s, making it the only true “anti-aging” treatment.
